Poetisa estadounidense. Estudió y después enseñó en las universidades de Nueva York y de Iowa. Su poesía abstracta e intelectual es conocida por su imaginería visual, metáforas complejas y contenido filosófico. Su primer volumen, Hybrids of Plants and of Ghosts [Híbridos de plantas y de fantasmas] (1980), contiene poemas concisos e intrincados que exploran las ideas de muerte, belleza y cambio. Entre sus volúmenes posteriores se cuentan The End of Beauty [El fin de la belleza] (1987), Region of Unlikeness [Región de disimilitud] (1991), The Dream of the Unified Field [El sueño del campo unificado] (1995, Premio Pulitzer), The Errancy [La errancia] (1997) y Swarm [Enjambre] (2000).
